Poppy dazzles at ‘excellent’ Rotary concert in Scotland

Amber’s golden fundraiser Poppy McGhee went more than just the extra mile to support Auchterarder & District Rotary Club’s ‘Evening of Musical Entertainment’ in Scotland last month.

Poppy made the 800-mile round trip from her school in Wiltshire to Auchterarder Parish Church near Perth to make a special guest appearance at the show. She was one of five young soloists to feature on the bill, alongside jazz orchestra ‘MOJO’ from nearby school Morrison’s Academy.

A sold-out audience of 175 people raised more than £1,500 for main beneficiary The Amber Trust and other local charities. The funds were swelled by a raffle during the mid-concert interval. Auchterarder & District Rotary Club’s Douglas Gilmour, who helped organise the event, was delighted.

“It was the first time all the young musicians had performed in front of a reasonably sized audience for nearly two years,” he said. “All of them stated they had really appreciated the opportunity and greatly enjoyed the experience.”

“They all performed wonderfully well and were hugely appreciated by the audience. Poppy, our 17-year-old guest violinist, was particularly outstanding. Definitely a name to watch for in the future.”

Soloists who featured in the concert had previously excelled in the Rotary Young Musician Competition. For information on the competition visit Youth Competitions – Our Projects – Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland (rotarygbi.org)
