From superstar pianist to budding journalist

We have a budding Amber journalist amongst us! Children’s newspaper First News asked eleven-year-old Benjamin to write an article about his experience performing at Amber’s Annual Concert earlier this year.

Benjamin writes beautifully about his performances of Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words and New Kid by Norton, and shares an insight into his experience as a partially sighted musician.

Benjamin, aged 11, writes:

On Sunday 19 May I performed two pieces on the piano as part of the Amber Trust’s Annual Concert. It was quite the experience and was an enjoyable afternoon.

I played two Grade 7 pieces: Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words and a jazzy piece called New Kid by Norton. What I like about piano playing is that it is fun and satisfying when I finally learn a tricky bit of a piece, and those two pieces were really nice to learn.

Although playing is enjoyable, I do face a challenge as a partially sighted musician, which is having to be really close to a score to actually read it. Apart from that, it does not affect me too much as I am lucky to be able to memorise music quickly.

I just wanted to say that some of the musicians we saw the other day were very impressive and talented.

Well done, Benjamin!
