We are delighted to announce that on Sunday 7th & Thurs 11th June, former Amber beneficiary Lydia will present an appeal on BBC Radio 4 on behalf of The Amber Trust.
Lydia will share how Amber’s support has helped her develop her musical skills, and explain the enormous impact that music had on her life as a blind child.
Lydia’s singing lessons were funded by Amber from the age of 10, and later she also received braille music lessons. Lydia has become an accomplished singer and performer, achieving grade eight in popular music vocals, and a diploma in classical singing. Music also opened up many opportunities to Lydia, including taking part in The Voice Kids in 2020.
Lydia says: “I’m twenty now, planning on going to university and thinking about a career. Music is my constant – it helps me connect with people and form those essential social bonds that I have found can be tricky as blind person – and that’s been wonderful for me”.
Many of the 29,000 vision-impaired children living in the UK have a real flair for music and, given the right support, can develop their talents to remarkable ends. The cost of specialist music tuition can be a significant barrier to many families.
As well as providing instrumental and vocal lessons for children like Lydia, the charity also offers specialist music sessions and resources for the families of blind babies & toddlers, and older vision-impaired children with complex needs.
